81st Golden Globe Looks

The 81st annual Golden Globes took place on Jan 7th, 2024, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, hosted by comedian Jo Koy. The night, which honors achievements in both film and television, kicked off a much-awaited awards season—and the spectacular fashion that comes with it.

Barbie and Succession led the night with nine nominations each, with Oppenheimer coming in second with eight nods. Other major players of the night include Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Past Lives, and The Bear. (The full list of nominees can be viewed here.) This is the first ceremony since the disbandment of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association last year. It will now be presented by the Golden Globe Foundation, which is comprised of Elridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions. See the full list of Golden Globes 2024 winners here.

The Globes also made history last night with the inclusion of a brand new category: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. As the name suggests, this new award honors high-grossing films—some of which would otherwise not receive these prestigious nods. While Barbenheimer obviously carried movie theaters through the summer, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, John Wick: Chapter 4, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie make up the inaugural class of nominees.

The Golden Globes red carpet has also been the scene of many a fashion moment over the years, from Julia Robertss pinstriped skirt suit in 1991, to Nicole Kidman's peacock feathered Gucci dress in 2005, and Natalie Portman's rose embellished Viktor & Rolf in 2011. Last year's highlights included Jessica Chastain's crystal spiderweb dress from Oscar de la Renta, Rihanna in a voluminous Schiaparelli, Hillary Swank's Prada maternity look, and Emma D'Arcy's suiting from Acne Studios.

Below, see what the stars wore to the 2024 Golden Globes—and be sure to check out the list of best dressed stars from last night's award show now.

Taylor Swift:

Taylor Swift just can't stop making history. At the 2024 Golden Globes, Taylor Swift walked the carpet in a glittering green Gucci gown that is giving some serious Reputation vibes. Swift paired the sequined column dress with matching metallic green stilettos for a head-to-toe lime look. The overall effect is kind of familiar, no? A bit like the snake emoji which has been widely associated with Swift's 2017 album Reputation? But, she decided to wear a snaky metallic green Gucci gown, covered in sequins that could be interpreted as scales, that screamed Reputation. Do you think she's trying to tell us something?! Swift kept her glam soft, with a natural mauve lip and her long hair styled in loose barrel curls. She added even more sparkle with DeBeers drop earrings and several silver rings. For the first time in five Golden Globe nominations, Swift was not nominated for best original song. This time she was nominated for her Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film in the brand-new category of cinematic and box office achievement, which, per Collider, honors the highest grossing films of the year. The day of the Grammys, Taylor changed her instagram profile picture to black and white scheme and showed up to the Grammys in white and black Schiaparelli with a clock chocker necklace set to midnight, seemingly confirming an upcoming announcement of for Rep TV to come at the Grammys. Ironically, she announced a new album instead.

Margo Robbie in Giorgio Armani.

Margo Robbie:

From influencing one of the biggest recent trends to giving us an iconic press tour, Margot Robbie has taken the whole stepping into Barbie's shoes stint very seriously, and it seems like she's not stopping anytime soon. As both 2024 and awards season gets started, it looks like the actor and producer is ready for another round of Barbie-inspired red carpet looks — and so are we. Robbie kicked off the new year at the Golden Globes 2024, where she was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. While she did not take home the award, Robbie made sure to leave a lasting impression on the public. For the early January event, Robbie recreated an outfit worn by an iconic Barbie doll. Her custom look from Giorgio Armani Privé was a reference to the Superstar Barbie doll from 1977. The look features a halter hot pink column dress with a matching mesh boa. For Robbie's 2024 update, she added glittering sequins to the dress and polka dots to the boa. She traded in the doll's sling-back Mary Janes for a classic point-toe heel in a coordinated hot pink hue from Manolo Blahnik. She also skipped the diamond necklace but opted for a statement ring and earrings from Lorraine Schwartz. While she did recreate the doll's pale pink lips and kept it simple with a nude manicure, she also switched out the bright blue eyeshadow for neutral eye makeup and left her hair down instead of doing the half-up, half-down look.

Hunter Schafer in Prada.

Hunter Schafer:

Sheer fabric to show off the body on the red carpet? It's getting a bit tired. But a sheer look that brings a dramatic, ethereal, haunted glamour? Well, just look at what Hunter Schafer wore to the 81st annual Golden Globes and you'll know it's instantly in. The Euphoria and Hunger Games star wore a custom Prada gown in a slight ballet slipper shade. Underneath, it's a simple column gown—but of course, the yards of diaphanous fabric that seem to float around her body give the dress its power. She looks like a glamour cobweb…the phantom of all the Victorian children you couldn't kill…the ghost of Hollywood future? Although created specifically for Schaefer, the gown takes notes from Prada's recent spring 2024 collection, where co–creative directors Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons used translucent fabric to create hazy apparitions around several dresses. Schafer is on hand to present tonight (and to serve on the red carpet). The former runway model has always demanded attention on the step and repeat, but she's stepped into another level over the past year—particularly with the string of dramatic outfits she wore while promoting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Barry Keoghan in Louis Vuitton.

Barry Keoghan:

“I believe in aggressive styling,” says Barry Keoghan's stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, mere hours before the Golden Globes red carpet begins. “We really lean into a theme.” The vibe for awards season 2024? Saltburn meets punk rock. “There was a moment when I thought should we take one thing off, but then I thought, ‘Nah, we're going for it,’” muses Urbinati, who was introduced to the rising Irish star by her partner, Keoghan's Muay Thai coach (before acting Barry wanted to be a boxer, which makes Ilaria's punchy styling approach all the more apt). From the earrings to the trouser chain and pearl button detailing adorning the 31-year-old's custom red plaid Louis Vuitton suit, it would be impossible to choose one accent to remove from Keoghan's boldest look to date. “It's pretty unique,” asserts Urbinati, before praising her collaborators. “I love the little love triangle we have going on between me, Barry and Louis Vuitton.” The cropped jacket and slim-cut trousers (two Keoghan signatures) are adaptations from Pharrell Williams's first collection for the French house, which was one of the biggest fashion moments of last year. The newly-instated creative director's work is the perfect match for Keoghan, who, according to his dresser, has “zero interest in anything overly traditional” and is “rebellious, adventurous and creative." His fiery tailoring is punctuated by a vintage Tiffany & Co. brooch bearing a pink-eyed animal with antlers – a nod to his Saltburn character Oliver's fancy dress costume from the chaotic, climactic party scene in Emerald Fennell's polarizing film.

Natalie Portman in Dior.

Natalie Portman:

The 42-year-old star arrived at the Beverly Hilton in L.A. tonight in a glittering dress from Dior, which was covered in tiny star-shaped sequins in shades of white, purple, yellow, blue, and green, giving the effect of a multicolored piece of candy—or even a field of flowers sprouting out of the ground, thanks to the green on the skirt of the dress. The spaghetti-strap, scoop-neck gown was paired with Jimmy Choo shoes, and Portman accessorized with silver teardrop earrings from De Beers. Her look was styled by Ryan Hastings. As for her beauty look, she kept things simple, slicking her hair back into a tight ponytail and sporting a pale pink nude lip, with makeup by Dior Beauty, courtesy of artist Lisay Storey. Portman is nominated tonight for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, for her role as Elizabeth Berry in Netflix drama May December. The film has four nominations at the Globes tonight, including noms for her costars Julianne Moore and Charles Melton, as well as a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Rosamund Pike in Dior.

Rosamund Pike:

Rosamund Pike channeled her inner Elspeth Catton at the 2024 Golden Globes. The actor looked like she walked straight out of Saltburn and onto the red carpet in fall 2019 Dior couture. Pike, who was nominated for her role as the film's aristocratic matriarch, dressed in a look befitting the film's last act. Pike wore a strapless black lace, tea-length dress over a fishnet mock neck long-sleeve with floral lace appliqué. Contrasting the original gladiator sandals that walked the runway, the actor opted for a pair of black open-toed platforms with an ankle strap. She finished off her look with diamond peacock feather rings and pear drop earrings. While Dior styled the model in a black fishnet veil, Pike opted for a more dramatic piece of headwear with opaque lace appliqué and a petite bow sitting atop her head. But the actor admitted that her choice of headwear was just as protective as it was fashionable. “I had an accident over Christmas actually,” she said on the red carpet. “On the 26th of December my face was entirely smashed up and I thought I need to do something.” Thankfully, she healed up quicker than expected, but Rosamund Pike still delivered a masterclass in function and fashion at the Golden Globes.

Timothee Chalamet in Celine and Cartier jewelry.

Timothee Chalamet:

Hedi Slimane's slim fit suits, rocker style infused with underground influences and dark glamour are a perfect match for Timothee's sartorial style. His embroidered jacket, styled with classic tuxedo trousers and Celine Homme Drugstore Chelsea boots showcase this perfectly. There were a lot of watches last night at the 2024 Golden Globes, but one clearly stood out among the sea of timepieces. Timothee Chalamet, who has been a Cartier ambassador for a couple of years now, is finally taking full advantage of his position. The Wonka actor touched down at the first major red carpet of the year wearing the Cartier Crash, widely considered one of the most desirable pieces in the world. Chalamet's Crash is a 2013 edition with diamonds set fully along the bezel. Hopefully this marks the start of a horologically-charged red carpet season for Chalamet. There were plenty of great watches elsewhere on the red carpet. Host Jo Koy wore a killer Rolex Submariner, while Omega dressed everyone from Barry Keoghan and Charles Melton to Will Ferrell. Take a spin through the gallery below to see the very best watches from the 2024 Golden Globes.

Compatability

My computer compataibility was good with the expection of the section at the bottom when you hover on Rosamund Pike or Timothee Chalamet. When I hover on the Rosamund Pike box, the Timmothe Chalamet and Compatability Boxes break. When I hover on the Timmothe Chalamet box, the Compatability Box breaks. The compatabillity box seems to become the most broken and wont even perform the transition in these cases. The transitions seem to spazz a bit before settling, and creating an odd double border around the boxes below the box just opened. I think the staggered right left formatting into the 98% width expansion transition is contributing this since it is cause the boxes floating right to have to jump down below the left box to fully expand. In the future, maybe I would just stack all of the boxes on top of each other but keep then short, and then expand to the full length with the hover function, hopefully mitigating the glitch issue. The transition performance also seem to depend a bit on your scrolling, and the issues seemed to improve slightly when uploaded to the server. However, when I set all of the boxes to the same height of 600px and then to a height of min-content at the transition as to eliminate the extra space, this seemed to work better as far as flow. As for the formating on my phone, none of the transitions worked, likely because these transitions are reliant upon a larger display and often include size specifications for a wider screen display. The are also relaint upon the hovering function to trigger, which would be difficult to emulate with the scrolling of a phone. However, I was suprised the color change hover transition didn't work considering this is not size based, but I guess dragging with you finger does not warrant the accuracy of a mouse to cursor to trigger the transition.
